What HTTP Is

Every time you open a website, submit a form, load an image, or interact with an online application, communication is taking place between your device and servers across the Internet.

In this course, you will learn how HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) makes that communication possible. You will explore how clients and servers communicate through HTTP requests and responses, how browsers retrieve HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, videos, fonts, and other resources, and why loading a single webpage can involve many different requests to multiple servers.

You will also be introduced to HTTP methods, status codes, APIs, request and response information, and the role HTTP plays in modern web applications. You will learn why traditional HTTP does not provide encrypted communication and how HTTPS uses TLS to protect information travelling between clients and servers.

Finally, you will see how web developers inspect HTTP activity using browser developer tools and how understanding HTTP can help diagnose common problems such as missing resources, failed requests, server errors, authentication issues, and HTTPS problems.

By the end of the course, you will have a strong foundation in how information moves across the Web and why HTTP and HTTPS are essential technologies for modern web development.
